Before photography, before daguerreotypes, before even the widespread availability of painted miniatures for anyone outside the very wealthy, silhouettes were how families preserved the likeness of the people they loved. A skilled silhouettist could capture a profile in minutes. The result black paper or shadow cut to the precise outline of a face was an accurate, affordable, permanent record of a person at a particular moment in time.
The best Victorian silhouettes are not simple shadow shapes. They capture posture, hair, the particular way a person holds their chin. They are portraits rendered in outline, and they carry the same emotional weight as any more elaborate form.
My silhouette commissions translate this tradition into 18k gold. The source is a photograph. The result is a permanent, wearable portrait of a person, a pet, or a figure that matters that can be worn daily and passed down through generations.
How it works: from photograph to finished pendant
The process begins with a photograph. For a human silhouette, I need a clear profile shot the subject facing directly left or right, with the face and hair fully visible and ideally against a plain background. For a pet, I need a photograph that clearly captures the animal's distinctive outline: the shape of the ears, the set of the tail, the particular way they hold their body.
From the photograph, I create a design rendering a precise outline drawing that will become the pendant. This is the stage where decisions are made about what to include and what to simplify. A silhouette is not a photographic trace. It is an interpretation, and the skill of the interpretation determines whether the result reads as a generic shape or a recognizable portrait.
You approve the design rendering before any metal is touched. If the outline needs adjustment, a hairline refined, a chin angle corrected that happens at this stage. You have one revision included in the commission price.
The metalwork.
Once the design is approved, it is executed in 18k yellow gold. The silhouette is cut or cast to the approved outline and finished to the standard appropriate for fine jewelry: smooth edges, consistent surface, secure bail for hanging.
The scale of the finished piece is determined during the consultation. Most silhouette pendants I produce are between 15mm and 25mm in their longest dimension large enough to read clearly when worn, small enough to wear comfortably every day. Larger or smaller dimensions are possible depending on the complexity of the silhouette and the client's preference.
What makes a silhouette commission work
The clients for whom silhouette commissions work best are those who have a specific, clear purpose for the piece. A mother who wants a pendant of her child's profile. A person who wants to memorialize a beloved horse or dog. Someone marking a significant birthday or anniversary with a portrait of the person being honored.
The more specific the purpose, the better the outcome. A commission grounded in genuine meaning, I want this because this person matters in this particular way, produces a piece with weight and presence that a decorative object alone does not have. The best commissions I have produced are the ones where the client could articulate exactly why they wanted it.
What does not work as well is vagueness. A client who wants 'something meaningful' without a specific person or relationship in mind will have difficulty making the design decisions that good commission work requires. I prefer to have a direct conversation about this before accepting a commission, because it is better for everyone to know early whether the project is the right fit.
Pricing and timeline
Silhouette commissions at L'Heritage start at $2,500. A 50% non-refundable deposit is required to begin. Production takes 10 to 12 weeks from deposit and design approval.
