Initial Necklaces in Gold: How to Choose One She Will Wear for Decades

Initial necklaces come into fashion every few years and go out again. The ones that survive the cycle, the ones still worn at sixty that were given at thirty, share three things: the right letter, the right letterform, and a material that does not wear through.

Each is a decision. Here is how to make all three.

Whose initial

Her own initial is the obvious choice and often the right one. It is hers regardless of what changes around her. A married surname initial is more complicated, and worth a moment's thought before it goes into gold.

A child's initial is the one that never stops being true. Many women wear a child's initial for decades, and it is one of the few personalized pieces that grows more meaningful with time rather than less.

Two or three children can mean two or three small pendants on one chain, or a single pendant with a monogram.

The test is simple: will she still claim this letter in thirty years? If yes, it belongs in gold.

Block letters or script

Script reads as personal and soft. It also loses legibility quickly at small sizes, and an elaborate script initial can look like a flourish rather than a letter from across a room.

Block and serif capitals are clearer and age more gracefully, which is why they have been engraved on silver, signet rings, and stationery for centuries.

A monogram, two or three letters arranged together, carries more formality. It reads as a family mark rather than a name tag, and it suits a more traditional wardrobe.

Enamel or diamonds

This is the real choice, and it is a choice of personality rather than quality.
The Initial Guilloché Pendant is 18k yellow gold, engine-turned in a swirling pattern under translucent enamel, with the monogram at the center.

The enamel has no prongs to catch on a sweater and no stones to check. It is quiet, historical, and unusual: very few people wear one, because very few workshops still make guilloché enamel. It is $2,055 for the pendant alone and $3,055 with an 18k chain.

The Diamond Letter Pendant is a puffed initial set entirely in pavé diamonds, in 14k gold, at $2,150. It is bright, modern, and catches light at every angle. Pavé means many small diamonds held by tiny beads of metal, so it rewards a quick look at the settings once a year.

Enamel is the pendant she wears with a white shirt. Pavé is the pendant she wears with black.

Solid gold, and what the label means

Below a certain price, most initial necklaces are plated, vermeil, or gold-filled. All three are a thin layer of gold over another metal, and all three wear through at the edges of the letter first, exactly where the eye goes. If a listing does not say solid gold and give a karat, ask. A personalized piece is meant to last; the material has to agree.

Chain length

A 16 inch chain sits at the collarbone, where an initial reads clearly and stays put. An 18 inch chain sits lower and layers more easily with a second necklace. For a first initial necklace, 16 inches is the safer gift.

Timing

Personalized pieces are made to order and take longer than anything in stock. If it is for the holidays, check the order-by dates before you choose the letter.

A letter is the smallest possible portrait. Choose the one that will still be true.
