Three enamel techniques that are constantly confused for each other
Enamel in fine jewelry is not one thing. It is a family of techniques that share a common material — vitreous enamel, essentially a form of powdered glass fused to metal — but differ significantly in process, appearance, and the skills required to execute them.
Guilloché enamel, cloisonné, and champlevé are the three techniques most often mentioned in luxury jewelry contexts. They are also, in my experience, the three most commonly confused — both by buyers and, occasionally, by jewelers who should know better. Here is a clear explanation of each, and why the differences matter.
Cloisonné: enamel contained by wire
Cloisonné — from the French word for partition — is a technique in which thin metal wires are bent and adhered to a metal base to form small enclosed cells, or cloisons.
Each cell is then filled with enamel of a specific color and fired. The wire partitions remain visible in the finished piece, creating the characteristic outlined appearance associated with cloisonné.
Cloisonné has a long history across many cultures — Chinese, Japanese, Byzantine, and others — and the technique can produce extraordinarily intricate pictorial work. The wire partitions double as design elements, creating hard-edged graphic images with clear color boundaries.
What cloisonné does not produce, by design, is the translucent, luminous depth of guilloché enamel. The enamel in cloisonné is typically opaque. The metal beneath it is flat or textured only at the micro level. There is no engraved pattern underneath to interact with the light.
Champlevé: enamel set into recessed channels
Champlevé — from the French for raised field — is a technique in which channels are carved, etched, or stamped directly into the surface of a metal base. Enamel is then pressed or poured into these recessed channels and fired.
After firing, the surface is ground and polished until the metal between the channels (the raised field) and the enamel within them are flush.
Champlevé produces a clean, flat surface with crisp color areas. It is durable — the enamel is protected on its sides by the surrounding metal — and it lends itself to bold, graphic designs. Medieval religious jewelry and Art Nouveau pieces frequently used champlevé.
Like cloisonné, champlevé typically uses opaque enamel. The design is rendered in flat color fields, and the metal acts as outline and border.
What you do not get is depth, luminosity, or the visual movement that comes from translucent enamel over a highly textured engraved surface.
Guilloché: enamel over a mechanically engraved surface
Guilloché enamel differs from both cloisonné and champlevé in one fundamental way: the enamel is translucent, and it is applied over a metal surface that has been engraved with a precise geometric pattern using a rose engine lathe.
Because the enamel is translucent, the engraved pattern beneath it remains visible through the enamel layer. Light enters the enamel, refracts and reflects off the engraved metal below, and exits the enamel in a way that creates depth, luminosity, and visual movement.
The piece looks different depending on the angle of light and the angle of viewing. It appears to have a three-dimensional interior, even though the surface is perfectly smooth.
This is the effect that distinguishes guilloché enamel from every other enamel technique. No wire partitions. No recessed channels. Just a mechanically engraved surface of extreme precision, covered in a perfectly applied layer of translucent glass-based enamel.
Why the distinction matters when you're buying
All three techniques require skill. All three can be executed at a high level or a low one. But they are not interchangeable, and they do not produce the same visual result.
If a jeweler describes a piece as guilloché but the enamel is opaque, it is not guilloché — it may be champlevé or a generic enameled surface. If you cannot see a pattern in the metal beneath the enamel when you hold it to the light, it is not guilloché.
Genuine guilloché enamel from a serious atelier — the kind produced on a rose engine lathe by craftspeople who have spent years mastering the process — has a visual quality that is immediately recognizable once you have seen it. The depth, the shimmer, the way the piece seems to breathe when you turn it in the light.
That is what you are buying when you invest in a guilloché enamel pendant. Not just a piece of jewelry with a colored surface. A small, functional demonstration of what precision craftsmanship can do with metal, light, and glass.
